Amanda DeBoer Bartlett is celebrating the release of her debut album of original songs, The Bones Still Glow, a series of emotional ballads written over the past 16 years. Themes of home, memory, family, and motherhood shine through in this moody, eclectic album, whose heart-wrenching emotional storytelling is buoyed by the sometimes gritty production by producer Dana Murray. Bartlett is a Chicago-based soprano, improviser, composer, and organizer and member of the internationally-acclaimed Ensemble Dal Niente, a Chicago-based contemporary chamber orchestra. She is also the founder and director of Quince Ensemble, an all-women contemporary vocal group, and Hasco Duo, an experimental improvisation and songwriting project. The Bones Still Glow is a new, art-pop direction for Bartlett, who has an international reputation as an avant-garde singer and improviser.
Em Spel is the solo project of Chicago-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Emma Hospelhorn. Her debut album, The Carillon Towers, folds myriad textures into songs that feel alternately lush, spiky, delicate, abstract, and grounded, yet simultaneously unified and cohesive. Hospelhorn is a flutist in avant-classical group Ensemble Dal Niente, and her discography includes work on flutes, bass guitar, and keyboards for V.V. Lightbody, Mute Duo, and others working in a diverse array of genres including folk, drone, garage rock, post-punk, and classical. In this solo endeavor, she fuses all of these influences with story-driven lyrics to create invitingly strange folk vignettes.
Mary aka Mesonjixx’ sound, writings, and performance-ethic are rooted in her blackness, queerness; a nuanced, complex pattern of light held by a thread of subconscious notions of pain, pleasure and unwavering joy. As deep and expansive as the South Pasifika, formative Red Clay. Soft, wet forever, earth. An ever-evolving experiment. Although her main stage is music, song-writing and performance she is also known to work passionately as an organizer, curator collaborator and emerging essayist and poet.
